ABOUT CMO SUMMIT

CMO SUMMIT HISTORY

The CMO Council first introduced events in 2001, with a focus on bringing together marketing executives around the theme of “Bruised and Battered Brands” in light of the Internet bubble’s implosion. This is where both the CMO Council and the CMO Summit events were born—around a table of peers, challenging best practices and advancing the role. Marketers gathered to discuss the impact of this tumultuous time on their companies and to share best practices around how they were recovering, rebuilding confidence and restructuring their organizations during this period of uncertainty.

With the overwhelming success of the first event, we decided to bring these events to different locations around the world on a near-yearly basis to discuss and debate key marketing trends and challenges that arose. In 2010, in the aftermath of the global recession, marketers faced a new set of challenges, but this time, staying entrenched in the office and keeping all attention on rebuilding was critical. This was also a time when new contenders and partners were entering the field, all of which were offering events and conferences designed specifically for the CMO. During this time, we took a break—partially to give marketers the opportunity to focus on their strategies and determine the directions they needed to take toward recovery, but also to refocus our own strategies around the content and thought leadership our CMO Council members have grown to expect.

Fast-forward to 2015, and we are finding that marketers have gained a renewed focus and are emerging as true leaders who are being tasked with shaping the path forward for their organizations. CMO responsibilities are being sub-divided and diluted, and in many organizations, marketing still struggles for legitimacy and credibility, leaving the definition of the CMO role in flux…and in question. So we rally once again, looking to focus on “CMO Rising: Reshaping the Role.” We will gather in London, Singapore and Napa, California, to discuss the importance of talent, technology and transformation as CMOs look to gain increased credibility and serve as true leaders for their organizations.
